We are delighted to welcome John Norris to our October workshop night. He will be discussing his life in photography. John writes:

“I will be showing images from the start of my journey as a professional photographer to the present day. I'll discuss the way I worked with clients and how I combined this with my personal work often involving friends and family in the process. Subjects will include ski mountaineering and climbing and working in extreme environments and weather. I'll also cover landscape and travel, macro projects, motorcycle travel and portrait projects.”

John worked for three decades as a professional freelance photographer and writer, contributing to magazines internationally and shooting for major brands in the adventure sports and travel industries, many of whom he worked with regularly for 25 years. He combined this with two decades as picture editor and staff photographer for a winter sports magazine.

While much of John’s work was in the high mountains, it also allowed him the opportunity to travel widely and to shoot personal work expressly for regular exhibitions in Europe. The prospect of creating images of a quality that he could exhibit as framed prints is a strong motivational force in his work. John is fascinated by the whole process of photography; the discovery of subject, the technique and choice of equipment required, and the editorial choices made at every stage.

While he loves the idea of the single stand-alone image, John has produced and exhibited several themed series, including a 35 print macro collection of alpine flowers shot in situ, English garden flowers (also in situ during lockdown!), motorcyclist portraits and nighttime tree studies.

He moved to Healesville a year ago and is now enjoying exploring and photographing his new home.
